Senator Justin Alfond

Senator Justin Alfond is currently serving in the Maine Senate representing Senate District 8, which comprises part of Portland. He was first elected in 2008, having never served in the Maine Legislature before.

A Maine Native, Senator Alfond attended public schools in Waterville and Dexter, before his family moved to Boston, where he completed his high school education. Later, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in business management.

After college, Justin spent 2 years on the professional golf circuit, followed by jobs in Boston, Orlando, and New York City before returning to Maine in 2003.

On his return to Maine, Senator Alfond launched the Maine chapter of The League of Young Voters, an organization devoted to developing new ways to educate, engage and mobilize young people around community issues, elections, and dynamic cultural events.

Under Justin's leadership, the League was a founding partner of Opportunity Maine which resulted in a 2007 state law that expanded higher educational opportunity to all Mainers. In 2006, The League passed a City of Portland ordinance that provides housing developers incentives to build affordable housing. Also in 2006, The League was a major stakeholder that guided and passed the Maine Energy Efficiency Disclosure Form for rental units in Maine. In 2008, Senator Alfond stepped down from his post at The League.

Justin currently is a real estate developer, living in Portland's Munjoy Hill neighborhood with his partner, Rachael.
