In December of 2008, Peter Bowman
was sworn in for his second term as a member of the
Maine Senate, serving the people of Senate District
1 in the communities of Eliot, Kittery, Ogunquit,
South Berwick and York in the 124th Maine Legislature.
As a three-term Commander of the Portsmouth Naval
Shipyard, Bowman developed a reputation to quickly
understand and deal with complex issues throughout
his 30 years of service in the U.S. Navy. Part of
his military experience includes teaching at the
Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA for a year
before serving as vice president of a regional manufacturing
company for 11 years.
Recognizing his leadership capabilities, U. S.
Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell selected
Peter to serve on the Base Realignment and Closure
Commission (BRAC) in 1993. In addition to these
leadership roles, Senate President Beth Edmonds
appointed Bowman to the Maine Regulatory Fairness
Board in 2006.
In 2005, the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce
made Bowman co-recipient of their "Citizen of
the Year" award. Perhaps one of his greatest
military distinctions he received was the "Legion
of Merit" award.
For the 124th Legislature, Senator Bowman chairs
the Insurance and Financial Services Committee and
serves as a member of the Utilities and Energy Committee.
Senator Bowman graduated from Cornell University
with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He also earned
an MS in Management and MS in Ocean Engineering from
MIT and graduated from the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power
and Submarine Schools.
He lives in Kittery with his wife Suzanne. Bowman
has three adult children and two grandsons.
