Senator Lynn Bromley represents the people of Senate
District 7, which includes the communities of South Portland, Cape
Elizabeth, and part of Scarborough. This is Lynn’s fourth
term in the Senate.
In 2002 Senator Bromley was appointed Senate Chair of the Joint
Standing Committee on Business, Research and Economic Development
and continues to serve as chair of this committee in the 123rd
legislature. Affordable housing is a key part of Senator Bromley’s
economic development agenda. In 2004 Senator Bromley was proud
to receive the Maine Association of Realtors’ “Service
Award” for outstanding service in protecting homebuyers
and home sellers in Maine and for supporting quality, affordable,
housing for all Maine citizens.
Since her election to the Senate, Senator Bromley has become
the legislative expert on sustainable economic development with
the focus on sustaining and growing Maine’s small business
economy, particularly innovation and entrepreneurship. She was
recently named chair of the Joint Select Committee on Research
and Development and the Innovation Economy.
Senator Bromley also chair the Maine Economic Growth Council
and serves on the Council of State Governments Committee on Suggested
Legislation, the Maine Substance Abuse Commission, and the Executive
Committee of Jobs for Maine Graduates. She is also a current
member of Planned Parenthood and the National Association of
Social Workers. She was awarded the Merchants Association Government
Service Award in 2005.
LEGISLATIVE HIGHLIGHTS
• Small Business & Consumer Protection – Created the Maine Regulatory
Fairness Board giving small businesses a voice in making regulations fair and
efficient. She authored Maine’s identity theft prevention file freeze law.
• Health Care – The very first bill she introduced
was LD1503 An Act to Make Health Care Affordable for Small Business.
She supports the mission of Dirigo Health to provide good quality
health care to Maine citizens and, preserved prescription drug
coverage for Maine’s seniors during the Federal Medicare
Part D Program implementation crisis.
• Growth Management– She co- authored affordable
housing Tax Increment Financing (TIF), established statewide
building code and several smart growth measures in her work as
Chair of the Community Preservation Advisory Committee.
• K-12 & Higher Education - A tireless advocate who
has worked on issues of education funding and tax policy, her
work with the delegation in this session secured an additional
$3.6 million in K-12 education dollars to the District and supported
a $250 million increase in state funding to improve schools and
reduce local property tax. She supported legislation that established
Maine’s Community College System, increasing enrollment
by 40% at Southern Maine Community College.
• Property Tax Reform - The Cumberland County delegation’s
support for LD 1, the tax relief measure, increased the Homestead
exemption to $13,000, doubling the maximum benefit through the
Circuit Breaker Program, delivering on the promise of direct
tax relief for the district.
Senator Bromley is respected by the Congressional Delegation
on issues regarding small business. In a recent visit to Maine
the Associate Administrator of the Small Business Administration
noted “the Maine legislature really gets it when it comes
to small business. Many would agree that this is due to Senator
Bromley’s consistent focus and advocacy and the work of
her engaged and effective Committee.”
Working with her Federal partners Senator Bromley recently encouraged
Maine small business owners to participate in the U.S. Small
Business Administration's (SBA) Regulatory Fairness Board Meeting.
This meeting provided small business owners an opportunity to
express their concerns regarding federal regulations.
" This is what small business owners here in Maine have been asking for,'
said Senator Bromley, ”Our Committee established a similar board here in
Maine to deal with concerns regarding Maine regulations, and the results although
still early, have been very promising."
Senator Bromley is a licensed family therapist and started her own business
in 1993.
Lynn lives in South Portland and has two children, Claire and
Mitchell, both of whom attend South Portland public schools. |
