Home Sweet Home

For most, owning a house is part of the “American Dream” we all strive to achieve in our lifetime. Nowadays it has become easier to find financial assistance to afford the cost of a house. These greater financial resources can also mean greater financial risks and gimmicks. Unfortunately, like all good things, there sometimes can be a catch.

Predatory lending has become a major problem for many looking to own a home. Sadly, predatory lenders have ruined some Maine families and homes because of unethical practices. As they look to earn a quick profit, a predatory lender will increase the home payments, include hidden fees, and apply other unrealistic terms to financially handcuff the consumer – otherwise known as “loan flipping.” Due to the financial hardship, most circumstances end in foreclosure and ruined finances – until now.

Leading the way across the nation, the Maine Legislature supported the creation of the Maine Homeowner Protection Act. Under the new law, lenders will be limited from charging unreasonable fees to consumers and will be prohibited from offering loans that a consumer cannot afford to repay. No longer will a Maine family lose their home to a sneaky lender. In Maine we understand “there is no place like home.”

Protecting Seniors

Retirement should be a time for relaxation and enjoying family and friends. Unfortunately, too many seniors find themselves burdened by health care costs or targeted by unscrupulous businesses. We took a number of steps this year to protect retirees. The state budget reflects this commitment. It funds the low-cost drugs for the elderly program [DEL] and expands support for long-term care, home-based care, and nursing homes.
