Born in Lewiston, Maine, John
Nutting graduated from Leavitt High School in
1967. Soon after, he went on to attend the University
of Maine at Orono where he earned his Bachelor
of Science Degree in Pre-Veterinary Medicine
in 1971.
In 1986, John Nutting was first elected to the
Maine Legislature. As a member of the House of
Representatives, he served in the 113th, 114th,
and 115th Legislatures. He was later elected
to serve in the Maine Senate for the 118th, 119th,
and 120th Legislatures. In 2004, John Nutting
ran for public office once again, and was elected
to serve in the Maine Senate representing District
17 in the 122nd Maine Legislature. He has since
been re-elected to the Maine Senate two more
times to serve in the 123rd and 124th Maine Legislatures.
Senate District 17 includes the communities
of Greene, Leeds, Lisbon, Livermore, Livermore
Falls, Mechanic Falls, Minot, Sabattus, Turner
and Wales.
Currently, Senator Nutting serves as the Senate
Chair of the Legislature’s Joint Standing
Committee on Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry
and is also a member of the Joint Standing Committee
on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. While
he is intimately involved in issues that come
before
each of these
committees,
his primary concerns remain property tax relief
for citizens, the cleaning up of the Androscoggin
River, and the protection of Maine’s mentally
ill.
Outside of the Legislature, Senator Nutting
is a registered dairy cattle breeder. He and
his wife, Sandra, live in Leeds and have two
sons and two grandchildren.
