Sen. Breen submits bill to provide property tax relief to Mainers

Sen. Cathy Breen, D-Falmouth, has submitted legislation to provide property tax relief to Mainers.

“I’ve heard from thousands of constituents about the increasing burden of property taxes on their family budgets,” said Sen. Breen. “Seniors on fixed incomes, some of whom have lived in the same homes for decades, and residents of Long Island and Chebeague Island, are being hit particularly hard.”

The legislation will provide a rebate from the state to qualified homeowners and renters. The legislation is based on the popular and effective “Circuit Breaker” program eliminated in 2013.

“Where income tax relief helps those who have enough income to owe taxes, property tax relief will help all Mainers, especially seniors and those who are struggling to provide for their families,” said Sen. Breen.

Nationally, seniors make up only 15.9 percent of federal income tax filers and are disproportionately represented in the population of people owing no federal income taxes.
