Sen. Chipman to introduce bill to ensure transparency in water districts
AUGUSTA — Sen. Ben Chipman, D-Portland, will introduce a bill, LD 1198,“An Act To Ensure Transparency and Participation in Maine Water Districts.” The public hearing for LD 1198 is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27 in the Energy Utilities and Technology Committee, after which it will be scheduled for a work session and have a committee vote.
“This bill is about ensuring transparency and fairness in water districts. We need to make sure water district trustees are accountable to the people they serve,” said Sen. Chipman.
The bill will allow local people in every water district in Maine to vote on water district trustee candidates. Less than half of the water districts in Maine currently have this election process. LD 1198 will keep the decision-making process of water district appointments in the hands of everyday Mainers rather than under the influence of outside interests.
If the bill is voted out of committee, it will face further votes before the Maine House and Senate.
