Sen. Heather Sanborn to chair Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee for the 129th Maine Legislature
AUGUSTA — Sen. Heather Sanborn, D-Portland, has been appointed by Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, to chair the Joint Standing Committee for Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services for the 129th Legislative session. The committee will focus on issues surrounding private health insurance and banking.
“As health care costs continue to spin out of control, Maine people are looking to leaders at the state level in search of much-needed relief,” said Sen. Sanborn. “My priority will be focusing on innovative solutions to lower the cost of prescription drugs and make health care more affordable for all.”
Sen. Sanborn also will serve on the Legislature’s Taxation Committee, which is responsible for the Bureau of Revenue Services and State Property Tax Review Board, state and local taxes, tax exemptions and credits and taxpayer relief programs.
Sen. Sanborn is serving her first term in the Maine Senate, representing part of Portland and part of Westbrook. She previously served in the Maine House of Representatives. A former public school teacher and attorney, Sen. Sanborn now owns and runs Rising Tide Brewery Company with her husband, Nathan, in Portland. Sen. Sanborn also served for many years on the Portland Development Corporation board.
Lawmakers are assigned to committees by the presiding officers based on their interests, experience and professional background. Joint standing committees are composed of three senators and ten representatives. The Legislature is set to reconvene Jan. 2.
