Sen. Louie Luchini to chair Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee for the 129th Maine Legislature
AUGUSTA — Sen. Louie Luchini, D-Ellsworth, has been appointed by Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, to chair the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs for the 129th Legislative session. The committee is responsible for a range of issues including veterans programs, the Maine National Guard, campaign practices, election laws, government ethics and gambling.
“I’m honored to be chosen to chair the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee,” said Sen. Luchini. “Having served with honor, veterans across Maine deserve the highest quality care and most meaningful recognition we can provide, and it is my privilege to lead this effort.”
Sen. Luchini also will serve on the Legislature’s Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee, which is responsible for hunting, fishing, trapping, ATVs and boating.
For eight years in the Maine House, Sen. Luchini made veterans’ issues a top priority. He chaired both the House Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs and the Committee on House Ethics. His work with veterans earned him a Legislator of the Year award from the American Legion in 2017.
Lawmakers are assigned to committees by the presiding officers based on their interests, experience and professional background. Joint standing committees are composed of three senators and ten representatives. The Legislature is set to reconvene Jan. 2.
