Sen. Millett statement on Mills’ education nominee
AUGUSTA—On Wednesday, Governor-Elect Janet Mills announced the nomination of Pender Makin to serve as Commissioner for the Maine Department of Education. Makin currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for the Brunswick School Department and is a 2001 recipient of the Milken Educator Award.
Sen. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, and Senate Chair of the Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, released the following statement:
“There is no doubt in my mind that Pender Makin will be an extraordinary Commissioner of Education. Our schools, our educators and our students need support, help and guidance from the Department of Education, and Pender has the experience to lead these efforts. I look forward to working with my fellow legislators on the Education Committee and in the State Senate to swiftly approve this nomination so Pender can get right to work helping our students all over the state.”
The Legislature’s Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs will hold a public hearing on Lambrew’s nomination and make a recommendation on the nomination early next year. Following the hearing, there will be a confirmation vote in the Maine Senate based on the Committee’s recommendations.
