Sen. Miramant submits legislation to improve the safety of ferries
AUGUSTA – Democratic Sen. Dave Miramant of Camden has submitted a bill for the upcoming legislative session that seeks to remedy oversights in ferry safety in Maine.
“It was recently brought to my attention that necessary training for onboard emergency situations on ferries is not being conducted; this is a critical safety issue that must be addressed,” said Sen. Miramant. “As an airline pilot, I feel strongly about ensuring that the safety and security of passengers is never compromised.”
The bill submitted by Sen. Miramant, LR 2364, “An Act to Improve the Safety of Ferries in the State,”would require the implementation of recommendations of a safety management systems report issued in 2008 addressing standard operating procedure matters.
The measure is supported by the crews and the Chair of the Ferry Advisory Board along with users of the ferry service.
All legislation will be presented to the Legislative Council for its approval on Thursday, October 22. If approved by the Council, the Legislature will take up bills when they reconvene for the second session in January, 2016.
