Senate Democrats congratulate UMaine on offshore wind victory
AUGUSTA — Assistant Senate Democratic Leader Dawn Hill offered hearty congratulations to the University of Maine’s New England Aqua Ventus project, which has been selected by the US Department of Energy for its top-tier offshore wind demonstration program.
The designation makes the project eligible for up to $40 million in funding in future years.
“This is a proud moment for our state and for the University of Maine and the rest of its consortium partners, who are poised to usher in a new era of sustainable energy for our state,” said Hill. “Democrats have always supported the development of clean energy, and will continue to do so. Offshore wind is an opportunity not only for energy independence, but for jobs for Maine people in the design, construction and maintenance of this technology.”
The UMaine-led consortium was selected by the Department of Energy as an alternate two years ago. The Department is looking for innovation to develop offshore wind technology to be deployed in deep water, where strong, reliable winds could create energy without impacts on communities.
