Senators Dill, Gratwick congratulate University of Maine interns
AUGUSTA – Aliya Uteuova and Belise Dusenge, students at the University of Maine at Orono, interned in the Senate Democratic Office for the spring semester. Their hard work was recognized by Sen. Geoff Gratwick, D-Bangor, and Sen. Jim Dill, D-Old Town.
“These two students represented both their home countries and their adopted communities very well. They have very bright futures ahead of them,” said Sen. Dill. “I know I speak for all of the Senate Democrats when I say they did a great job and I wish them good luck in school and beyond.”
“These two students handled the unpredictable nature of the Legislature very gracefully and were a great asset to the Senate Democrats,” said Sen. Gratwick. “I wish them all the best.”
For their part, the two interns had a very positive experience in the State House. “Interning at the Senate Democratic Office was a valuable experience for me,” said Uteuova, a political science and journalism major who hails from Kazakhstan. “As a foreigner, I learned about the Legislature first hand, and there is still so much more to learn.”
“Being at the State House helped me to understand why social workers need to get involved in the political process,” said Dusenge, who is from Burundi and is enrolled in the University’s social work program.
The two third-year students will continue their studies in Orono in the fall, after final exams and a well-deserved break this summer
