Statement from Sen. Jackson on the Governor’s decision to close Downeast Correctional Facility

AUGUSTA — Senate Democratic Leader Troy Jackson, of Allagash, released the following statement after learning of the governor’s order to remove all prisoners from the Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport overnight. Over 50 employees will be terminated as of March 1, 2018.

“This kind of covert decision is unacceptable. Yet here we are with another backdoor attempt by the governor to go against the bipartisan work and support in the Legislature. It’s a real shame. This is not how we govern. Unfortunately, this is just one more time that the governor let the people of Washington County down. They deserve better – we all deserve better than this.”

“Downeast is a model for how a prison should operate. It is effective and provides a transition for many inmates to successfully integrate back into society. This cowardly decision made today – before the sun even came up – will have a devastating economic impact on the people of Washington County.”
