Do you support Maine’s decision to opt out of the national Real ID program, which would have cost state taxpayers over $100 million to implement?


Are you or your children likely to take advantage of the Opportunity Maine program, which provides tax credits for college loan repayments to Maine students who graduate from a Maine college or university and then work in Maine?



Should Maine consider adopting the Massachusetts model of universal health care coverage, which requires both employers and employees to contribute?



Do you favor amending the State Constitution to require a 2/3 vote of the Legislature to raise or lower taxes?


This year, the Legislature passed a budget that did not raise taxes and came in $240 million below the state spending cap. Should lowering taxes be a priority for the Legislature, even if it means cutting funding for higher education, state parks, health care, public safety, law enforcement or environmental protection?


Should Maine invest more in economic development initiatives, including research and development and fixing our roads and bridges, in an effort to create good jobs in Maine?


Should the State increase its rainy day fund, even though current reserves total approximately $150 million?


Maine has one of the narrowest sales taxes in the country, with much of the revenue coming from two sources – vehicle sales and construction materials. Would you support expanding the sales tax, bringing Maine more in line with other states, if the proceeds were used to cut income and/or property taxes?


Plum Creek’s proposal to develop house lots and resorts in the Moosehead Lake area has been controversial. Do you generally favor such development?


The Land Use Regulation Commission recently turned down the proposed Redington Wind Farm in western Maine, although a revised proposal is expected. The conflict pits two common environmental goals – reduced reliance on fossil fuels and protection of undeveloped wild places – against one another. Do you support the Redington project?


MaineCare provides health insurance to 250,000 Maine people, including the elderly, the disabled, and low-income working families up to 200% of the poverty level (about $28,000 for a family of two). Do you favor maintaining current eligibility standards in MaineCare?


In 2004, Maine people approved an initiative requiring the State to cover 55% of K-12 education costs. The State now provides approximately $1 billion a year to local school districts. Should the state continue this level of support?


The State prison population has been growing steadily and prison overcrowding has become a problem. Would you favor the early release of non-violent prisoners to ease overcrowding?


Do you support raising the cigarette tax and dedicating the new revenues to health care?

The Maine Tax and Rent Refund Program "Circuit Breaker Program"

The Circuit Breaker program begins August 1, 2007 for refunds of property tax assessed and rent paid during 2006. (Note: The program to apply for refunds of property tax assessed and/or rent paid during 2007 begins August 1, 2008.)

Over 200,000 Maine households qualify for a partial refund of property tax assessed and/or rent they paid in 2006. The maximum refund available is $2,000. You may qualify for a refund if:

You do not have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2006 household income was $80,750 or less; or

You do have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2006 household income was $105,750 or less

AND

Your 2006 property tax was more than 4% of your 2006 household income; or

The rent you paid in 2006 was more than 20% of your 2006 household income.

Completed applications for the program are due by June 2, 2008.
