Work plan for state bridge and road projects unveiled

Sen. Shenna Bellows of Manchester is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state

“Ensuring that our transportation infrastructure is up-to-date and safe is vitally important for central Maine residents and business owners,” said Sen. Bellows. “I’m glad to see this work is scheduled for our local roads, bridges, and pedestrian and bike paths.

According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $511.1 million is scheduled for 604 capital projects in 2018. The 3 year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 229 miles of highway construction; 1,128 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 240 spot and safety improvements; 260 bridge construction projects; $18.7 million in ports and marine upgrades; and $15.9 million in rail projects; $63 million in transit capital; $43.95 million in aviation projects; and $7.84 million in bicycle access and pedestrian facilities

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in the region in 2018

Paving projects:

  • Paving of 5.5 miles of Route 226 from Water Street in Randolph to Eastern Avenue in Chelsea
  • Paving of 3.99 miles of Route 9 in Litchfield and West Gardiner from 0.14 miles west of Huntington Hill Road and going northwesterly

Bridge work:

  • Replacement of the Bridge Street Bridge that takes Route 201 over Cobbossee Stream in Gardiner
  • Replacement of the Main Avenue Bridge that takes Route 24 over Cobbossee Stream in Gardiner
  • Bridge protective coating on bridges on Interstate 95 and Interstate 295 including in Gardiner and West Gardiner
  • Replacing the wearing surface on the Collins Bridge on Collins Mill Road over Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner
  • Replacing the joint armor and repairing the curb on Route 126/Interstate 295 Bridge in West Gardiner over Interstate 295 north and southbound
  • Bridge substructure rehabilitation on the Togus Bridge on Route 27 over Togus Stream at the Pittston town line

Highway construction and rehabilitation:

  • Work on 0.54 miles of Route 201 in Hallowell from 0.10 miles north of Winthrop Street going southerly
  • Work on 1.67 miles of Route 202 in Augusta and Manchester beginning 0.16 miles east of the intersection of Granite Hill Road and extending easterly

Bicycle/Pedestrian improvements:

  • Work on the Cobbossee Stream Trail along the rail line from Water Street to Winter Street in Gardiner, including improvements to the rail bridge over the stream along Summer Street
  • Work along Main Avenue beginning at the Kennebec River Rail Trail in Gardiner towards Arcade Street, then to the Bridge Street Bridge on Route 201
  • Work on 0.60 miles of Academy Road in Monmouth beginning at Route 132 and extending northwesterly

Drainage maintenance:

  • Grader ditching and cleaning under the guard rail on 3.76 miles of Pond Road from the Litchfield/West Gardiner town line to the Route 126 intersection at the West Gardiner/Gardiner town line
  • Ditching and replacing culverts on 4.68 miles of High Street in West Gardiner from Browns Corner to the West Gardiner/Gardiner town line
  • Ditching on 4.47 miles of the Hallowell Litchfield Road from the West Gardiner/Farmingdale town line to Winthrop Street in Hallowell
  • Ditching and replacing two culverts on Route 135 in Manchester and Readfield beginning at the Scribner Hill Road intersection in Readfield and extending north 3.25 miles
