Work plan for state bridge and road projects unveiled

Sen. Susan Deschambault of Biddeford is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.

“Well-maintained transportation infrastructure is vital for people to get to school, to work, and in conducting every other part of their lives,” said Sen. Deschambault. “I’m glad to see that the Maine Department of Transportation will be conducing this important work over the next few years.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $511.1 million is scheduled for 604 capital projects in 2018. The 3 year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 229 miles of highway construction; 1,128 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 240 spot and safety improvements; and 260 bridge construction projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in the region in 2018:

Paving projects:

  • Paving on Route 4 in Alfred, Berwick, North Berwick, Sanford and South Berwick beginning 0.13 miles south of Driscoll Lane and extending northeasterly 6.23 miles and continuing 0.07 miles north of Route 109 and extending northeastward 4.27 miles
  • Paving of 0.60 miles of Route 4 in Alfred beginning at Route 4A and extending northward
  • Paving on 5.05 miles of Log Cabin Road in Arundel and Kennebunkport beginning at Route 9 and extending northward
  • Paving on 4.06 miles of Route 35 in Arundel, Dayton and Lyman beginning at the Kennebunk/Arundel town line and extending northward
  • Paving on 5.5 miles of Route 1 in Arundel, Biddeford and Kennebunk beginning 0.04 miles south of Barnard Lane and extending northeastward
  • Paving on 0.48 miles on Route 9 in Biddeford and Saco from the rail road tracks and extending northward to Elm Street
  • Paving on 0.39 miles of South Street in Biddeford from South View Drive to Mt. Pleasant Street
  • Paving on 0.51 miles of West Street beginning at Route 9 and extending northward
  • Paving on 0.88 miles of West Street in Biddeford beginning 0.03 miles north of Sky Oaks Drive and extending northward

Bridge work:

  • Bridge and structural maintenance work on Durrells Bridge over the Kennebunk River on Durrells Bridge Road at the Kennebunk/Arundel town line
  • Bridge and structural maintenance on Mill Pond Bridge on Route 9 in Kennebunkport

Highway construction and rehabilitation:

  • Work on Route 111 in Arundel and Lyman between Route 35 and Thompson Road
  • Work on 0.19 miles of Main Street in Biddeford beginning at Lincoln Street and extending westward
  • Work on the large culvert at the intersection of Route 5 and River Road in Dayton
  • Work on 1.65 miles of Route 9 in Kennebunkport beginning at Main Street and extending northward
  • Work on 0.68 miles of North Street in Kennebunkport beginning at Mill Lane and extending northward
  • Work on 0.86 miles of Route 111 in Lyman beginning at Route 35 and extending westward
  • Work on 1 mile or Route 111 beginning at Route 35 and extending eastward

Highway safety improvements:

  • Work on 0.96 miles of Route 111 in Alfred and Lyman beginning 0.08 miles from Clark Road and extending eastward
  • Work on 0.58 miles of Route 111 in Arundel beginning at Old Alfred Road and extending westward
  • Work on Route 111 at the intersection of New Road and Old Alfred Road in Arundel

Surface and base maintenance:

  • Shimming on the eastbound side of Route 111 in Alfred and Lyman beginning at Walker Road and extending westward 1.00 mile to Blueberry Hill Road

Custodial maintenance:

  • Sealing bridges on Route 112, Route 9 and Route 5 in Biddeford, Buxton and Saco in order to help preserve the longevity of the structures
  • Removal of overgrown brush within the right-of-way on Route 9 in Biddeford beginning at the intersection of Pool Street and New Town Road extending southward 3.67 miles to the Biddeford/Kennebunk town line
  • Tree and brush removal on 1.1 miles of Route 35 in Dayton beginning at Gould Road and extending northward
  • Clearing trees on5 miles of Route 111 in Lyman beginning at the town line and extending westward to the Alfred town line

Aviation:

  • Safety and infrastructure improvements at the Biddeford Municipal Airport

Operational and safety maintenance:

Replacement of 25 feet of approach guard rail at each end of Durrells Bridge over the Kennebunk River on Durrells Bridge Road at the Kennebunk/Arundel town line
