CAIN SWORN IN TO MAINE STATE SENATE

“Excited and ready to get to work”

 

AUGUSTA—Emily Cain of Orono was sworn in to the Maine Senate at the State House in Augusta today. Senator Cain was elected to her first term in the State Senate in November,after serving four terms, eight years, in the Maine House of Representatives.

 

“I am excited and ready to get to work in the Senate on behalf of District 30,” said Senator Cain. “There are both challenges and opportunities for us during this session and I am confident that the next two years will bring great results for Maine people.”

 

Governor Paul LePage administered the oath of office to Cain and 34 of her Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. Cain represents Senate District 30, which is made up of 21 communities in Penobscot County, including Lincoln, Old Town, and Orono. Cain also had the honor of opening the Swearing-In Ceremonies by performing the National Anthem.

 

Cain works as Coordinator of Advancement for the Honors College at the University of Maine and is working part-time towards a Ph.D. in Higher Education with a concentration in public policy from UMaine. Cain earned her undergraduate degree in Vocal Music Education from the UMaine and her master’s degree in Higher Education from Harvard University. She was first elected to the House in 2004 at the age of 24.

 

While a member of the House, Cain focused on issues of economic development, access to affordable, high quality higher education, and breaking the cycle of domestic violence in Maine.  Cain served on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, and the Appropriations Committee, which she chaired in the 124th Legislature. In the prior session, Cain served as the Democratic Minority Leader, the youngest woman to hold that position in Maine history. She lives in Orono with her husband, the Hon. Daniel B. Williams, and their dog, Bartlet the pug.

Today marked the official start of the 126th Maine State Legislature however, the first day of the Regular Session is expected to begin on January 8, 2013.

 

Of the 35 Senate members, there are 19 Democrats, 15 Republicans, and 1 unenrolled member. Seven are women—all Democrats—and 28 are men: 12 Democrats, 15 Republicans, and 1 unenrolled. There are 17 new members: 10 have recently served in the House of Representatives, one is a former House member and 6 have no previous legislative experience, all Democrats. 18 are incumbents.
