AUGUSTA — On Tuesday, April 29, Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, presented legislative sentiments to the Cape Elizabeth High School Debate Team for winning the state championship in team Congressional Debate, and to team member Caroline Straw for winning the state championship in individual Congressional Debate.

“It was an honor to host the Cape Elizabeth High School state champions in Congressional Debate at the State House,” said Sen. Carney. “Caroline, Celeste, Jonah and Gideon represented our state and community well in debates over everything from serious legislative matters to fun pop culture topics, like Godzilla. I hope they will consider putting their skills to work in a legislative role one day, and I wish Caroline luck as she heads to Chicago at the end of May to compete in the National Catholic Forensic League’s National Debate Championship Tournament.”

The Cape Elizabeth High School Debate Team is coached by Lisa Melanson. The state champion congressional debate team included Caroline Straw, Jonah Milton, Gideon Straw and Celeste Tourangeu. The Maine State Championship Tournament was held on January 25 at Skowhegan Area High School.

At the end of May, Caroline will be competing in the National Catholic Forensic League’s National Debate Championship Tournament in Chicago against students from across the country.

Sen. Carney represents Maine Senate District 29, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and part of Scarborough.
