Sen. Anne Carney, Rep. Matthew Beck present legislative sentiments to Class AA State Champion South Portland High School Girls Basketball team

AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, April 30, Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, and Rep. Matthew Beck, D-South Portland, presented legislative sentiments to the South Portland High School Girls Basketball team in recognition of their championship wins at the state and regional levels. The South Portland team won the Class AA State Championship and the Class AA South Regional Championship.

“It was an honor to host the State Champion South Portland High School Girls Basketball team at the State House to celebrate their achievements this season,” said Sen. Carney. “The team worked so well together under their new head coach, earning South Portland the Gold Ball for the first time since 1986. Congratulations, Red Riots.”

“The South Portland Girls Basketball team had an outstanding season,” said Rep. Beck. “With their excellent performance on the court, they were able to cap off a strong season with a Class AA championship. The community is so proud of this team.”

The South Portland Girls Basketball team is coached by Brianne Maloney, John Maloney and Kelsey Flaherty. This is the team’s first state championship since 1986.

South Portland defeated defending champion Cheverus 54-48 at the Class AA State Championship at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on March 1.

Sen. Carney represents Maine Senate District 29, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough. Rep. Beck represents Maine House District 122, which includes part of South Portland.
