Sen. Bailey appointed to Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services and Judiciary Committees
AUGUSTA — Sen. Donna Bailey, D-Saco, has been appointed to serve on the Joint Standing Committee on Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services and the Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary for the 131st Maine Legislature. Sen. Bailey will serve as Senate Chair for the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee, which covers banking and financial institutions, servicing student loans and debt collection, all types of insurance, stocks and bonds and occupational and professional licensing. Jurisdiction for the Judiciary Committee includes freedom of access laws, civil and criminal procedure, protection from abuse and domestic violence and human rights.
“As the newly appointed Senate Chair for the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee, I look forward to helping make sure that Mainers have strong consumer protections and access to affordable, high-quality insurance,” said Sen. Bailey. “I also look forward to serving on the Judiciary Committee, so that I can continue my legislative work to seek justice for domestic abuse survivors, as well as survivors of sexual assault and harassment. In these roles, I know that I’ll be able to well serve – and be a clear voice for – my constituents, especially those navigating complex financial or insurance services and those recovering from the trauma of abuse or assault.”
During her first Senate term in the 130th Legislature, Sen. Bailey served on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee and the Government Oversight Committee.
For the 131st Legislature, Sen. Bailey will also serve on the Senate Standing Committee on Conduct and Ethics.
Lawmakers are assigned to committees by the presiding officers based on their interests, experience and professional background. Joint standing committees are composed of three senators and ten representatives. The Legislature will reconvene on Jan. 4, 2023.
