Sen. Daughtry shares MDOT work plan for state projects

AUGUSTA – Sen. Daughtry, D-Brunswick, is pleased to share the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, North Yarmouth and Pownal. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“I’m excited to see investments in our communities from the Maine Department of Transportation,” said Sen. Daughtry. “I encourage you to learn more about their plans and projects.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan covers approximately $2.71 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes 2,180 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 100 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 893 miles of pavement preservation; 2,175 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 222 safety and spot improvements; and 166 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for the communities in Senate District 24 in 2021:

Aviation:

  • At the Brunswick Executive Airport, safety and infrastructure improvements that include pavement repairs and maintenance.

Bridge Work:

  • In Brunswick, deck replacement of the Maine Street Bridge over Route 1, located 0.01 of a mile south of Route 201.
  • In Brunswick, bridge wearing surface replacement on the River Road Bridge over Interstate 295, located 0.22 of a mile northwest of Fox Run Drive.
  • In Brunswick and Topsham, replacement of the Frank J. Wood Bridge over Androscoggin River, located at the Topsham town line.
  • In Freeport, replacement of the Approach Road Interchange Bridge over Interstate 295, located 0.44 of a mile northwest of Route 1.
  • In Freeport, improvements to the Railroad Crossing Bridge over MCRR, located 0.05 of a mile south of Summer Street.
  • In Freeport, replacement of the Merrill Road Bridge over Interstate 295, located 0.14 of a mile southeast of Hunter Road. FHWA CHBP Grant recipient.
  • In Freeport, bridge wearing surface replacement on the County Road/I-295 Bridge over Interstate 295, located 0.56 of a mile east of Webster Road.
  • In Freeport, replacement of the Route 1/Cousins River Bridge over Cousins River, located on the Freeport-Yarmouth town line.
  • In North Yarmouth, substructure rehabilitation of the Walnut Hill Bridge over MCRR, located 0.14 of a mile north of Hazel Lane.
  • In North Yarmouth, maintenance to the Hays Mill Bridge in North Yarmouth, located 0.99 of a mile east of Gray Road.

Culvert and Ditch Improvements:

  • In Brunswick, ditching and culvert replacement on Old Bath Road in Brunswick beginning at Bay Bridge Road and extending east 0.51 of a mile to the West Bath town line.
  • In Brunswick, culvert replacement on Route 1 in Brunswick located 1.01 miles east of the Freeport town line.
  • In Freeport and Pownal, culvert replacement on Pownal Road located at Pownal-Freeport town line and 0.40 of a mile west of Knotty Pine Drive in Freeport.
  • In North Yarmouth, large culvert replacement on Route 115 located 0.05 of a mile south of Mill Road.
  • In Pownal, ditching on Elmwood Road beginning in Freeport at the Pownal-Freeport town line and extending east 1.70 miles to Knotty Pine Drive.

Bicycle/Pedestrian:

  • In Brunswick, construction of a new path at the Brunswick Multimodal Center Pathway beginning at Union Street and extending west 0.13 of a mile.
  • In Brunswick, construction of a new sidewalk/trail on Allagash Drive beginning at Fitch Avenue and extending west 0.73 of a mile.
  • In Freeport, construction of a sidewalk/trail on Route 1 beginning at Cousin’s River Bridge and extending northeast 0.35 of a mile to Old South Freeport Road.

Highway Paving:

  • In Brunswick, pavement resurfacing on Bath Road beginning at the West Bath town line and extending west 1.97 miles to the Old Bath Road.
  • In Brunswick, pavement resurfacing on Route 196 beginning 0.12 of a mile south of the Topsham town line and extending north 1.79 miles to Route 201, including the Merry Meeting Bay Bridge.
  • In Brunswick, highway paving on Pleasant Street beginning 0.08 of a mile east of Route 1 and extending east 0.50 of a mile to Route 24B.
  • In Brunswick, paving on Route 1 beginning at the Freeport town line and extending east 3.46 miles to Pleasant Street.
  • In North Yarmouth, pavement resurfacing on Route 115 beginning 0.33 of a mile northwest of Partridge Lane and extending southeast 4.90 miles to Route 231.
  • In North Yarmouth, paving on Route 9 beginning at Tuttle Road extending north 2.10 miles to Route 115.

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements:

  • In Brunswick, new construction extending Katahdin Drive beginning at the intersection with Allagash Drive and extending north to Route 24B.
  • In Brunswick and Freeport, new lighting on Interstate 295 located at Exit 22 in Freeport and Exit 28 in Brunswick.
  • In Freeport, intersection improvements on I-295 at the intersections of Route 125 and the I-295 Exit 22 northbound and southbound on- and off-ramps and at the intersections of Desert Road and the I-295 Exit 20 northbound and southbound on- and off-ramps, and Route 1 intersection.
  • In Pownal, addition of a flashing beacon on Route 9 located at the intersection of Elmwood Road and Hallowell Road.

Piers and Marine Facilities:

  • In Harpswell, construction on the Great Island Boatyard located off Harpswell Island Road (Route 24).

Policy, Planning and Research:

  • In Brunswick, enhanced project scoping at the Pleasant Street Corridor.
  • In Freeport, a feasibility study to evaluate multimodal connectivity associated with MaineDOT’s replacement of the Cousins River Bridge project.
  • In Brunswick, a feasibility study for a bicycle/pedestrian path on the Brunswick River Walk beginning at the Swinging Bridge and extending north along US Route 1/ Mill Street to Bow Street and Cabot Street, and extending 0.32 of a mile to the Frank J. Wood Bridge (#2016). Also includes the US Route 1 South on-ramp.
