Sen. Deschambault moves to clarify the qualifications for county sheriffs
AUGUSTA — Sen. Susan Deschambault, D-Biddeford, introduced bill LD 456, “An Act To Strengthen the Qualifications for County Sheriffs,” at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25 to the State and Local Government Committee at the State House.
LD 456 would fix a discrepancy in the job description for county sheriff. Currently, a candidate for county sheriff must have at least five years of supervisory employment experience. This bill specifies law enforcement supervisory experience as a requirement for the job.
“It’s important to make sure we get the most qualified applicants for county sheriff positions, and this bill will help us achieve that goal,” said Sen. Deschambault, who is Senate Chair of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
The bill faces further action in the committee and votes before the Maine House and Senate.
