Sen. Duson welcomes Deering debate team captains to the Maine Senate
AUGUSTA – On Thursday, February 29, Sen. Jill Duson, D-Portland, welcomed the Deering debate team to the State House and presented them with a legislative sentiment honoring the team’s recent accomplishments at the Maine Speech and Debate State Championship Tournament.
“This is a group of exceptional young minds from the Deering High School debate team,” said Sen. Duson. “The debaters showed up and showed out, as the team collectively was named the runners-up in debate at the state championship tournament. However, the most impressive feat was that of the team’s captains. Both teams of Eli and Isabella, and of Mya and Violet went undefeated in the entire state championship. This resulted in both pairs being named co-state champions in Varsity Public Forum Debate!”
The Deering debate team is made up of students that compete in a variety of events in speech and debate. The team captains Eli Tuchinsky, Isabella Figdor, Mya Landry, and Violet Blum-Levine were honored for being named co-state champions in Varsity Public Forum Debate at the Maine Speech and Debate State Championship. The Deering debate team collectively placed 2nd in the category of debate. The team captains, along with Zachary Lee, qualified for the National Catholic Forensics League National Tournament in Chicago, IL. The team is coached by Krista Simonis and Bilal Hussein.
