Sen. Duson welcomes Deering High School debaters to the State House

AUGUSTA ­­— On Saturday, Sen. Jill Duson, D-Portland, welcomed members of the Deering High School Debate at the Maine State House.

The students were competing in the national qualifying tournament for Congressional Debate for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament which is set for June 2024 in Des Moines, IA.

“I’m very much inspired to see the next generation of Mainers express their viewpoints effectively and debate the pressing issues facing America,” said Sen. Duson.

Deering High School student Zachary Lee placed 5th in the state tournament last week and earned a qualification for the National Catholic Forensic League National Tournament in Chicago. The Deering Debate Team placed 3rd for Congressional Debate. This tournament was the penultimate event of the debate team’s season.
