Sen. Hickman shares MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects
AUGUSTA – Sen. Craig Hickman, D-Winthrop, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 14. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.
“I am excited to see all the planned projects for my district come to fruition this upcoming year,” said Sen. Hickman. “We have been working hard to rebuild, and seeing this assistance from the state is encouraging.”
According to the MDOT, the work plan covers a historic $4.74 billion worth of construction and maintenance. This is thanks to a vital bipartisan investment approved in the Legislature last year. A more detailed breakdown of the statewide, three-year plan can be found here.
The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in Senate District 14 in 2024:
Bridge and Structural Maintenance
- In Bowdoinham, Gardiner, and West Gardiner expect highway-bridges and bridge joint replacements in various locations across interstate 295 bridges.
- On Pittston’s highway there will be a minor spans bridge replacement – PE only along route 27 Nehumkeag Bridge (#5283) and over Nehumkeag Brook. Located 0.1 of a mile north of Forest Lane.
- There will be structural maintenance on Randolph Bridge along Route 27. Maintenance will include replacing curb and rail on Togus Bridge (#2862) which carries Route 27 over Togus Stream at the Pittston-Randolph town line. Located 100 feet southeast of Mill Road.
- In Bowdoinham, Gardiner, and West Gardiner highway-bridges and bridge joint replacements will take place in various locations along interstate 295 bridges.
Highway Paving/Rehabilitation
- In Farmingdale and Gardiner expect highway paving along rural highways mill and fill along Route 201 beginning at the Gardiner-Interstate 295 southbound and Route 201 exit ramp extending northeast 4.77 miles. Includes ramps.
- In Farmingdale and Hallowell there will be highway paving for rural highways mill and fill along route 201 beginning 0.04 of a mile south of 1st Street and extending north 1.07 miles. Project funding is contingent on Congressionally Directed Spending approval.
- Along Farmingdale and Hallowell highways expect paving and light capital paving on Maple Street beginning at the Litchfield Road and extending east 2.56 miles. Includes paved shoulders.
- In Gardiner and West Gardiner expect highway paving and interstate an ultra-thin bonded wearing course along Interstate 295 Southbound beginning 1.19 miles north of the Gardiner town line and extending south 21.63 miles
- There are plans for highway paving along rural highways mil and fill for Route 201 beginning at the Gardiner-Interstate 295 southbound Route 201 exit ramp and extending northeast 4.77 miles. Includes ramps.
- In Gardiner, highway paving and light capital paving along Route 24 begins at Farm Family Lane and will extend north 2.15 miles. Includes paved shoulders.
- In Gardiner and Richmond expect highway paving and light capital paving along Route 24 beginning at the Bowdoinham town line and extending north 7.55 miles. Includes paved shoulders. Bridge milling – Bridge #2568.
- In Gardiner and West Gardiner there will be highway paving and interstate ultra-thin bonded wearing course for Interstate 295 Northbound beginning at the Brunswick town line and extending north 21.51 miles.
- In Gardiner and West Gardiner expect highway paving and interstate ultra-thin bonded wearing course along Interstate 295 Southbound beginning 1.19 miles north of the Gardiner town line and extending south 21.63 miles.
Large Culvert Improvements
- In Manchester and West Gardiner there will be drainage maintenance along Neck Road, Pond Road as well as ditching and replacing culverts on Neck Road and Pond Road in various places. Beginning at the intersection of the Collins Mills Road and extending 5.34 miles northeast to the intersection of Western Avenue.
Highway Safety and Spot Improvements
- In Chelsea, highway safety and spot improvements and rural highways intersection improvements W/O Signal Route 17/Windsor Road, located at the intersection of Route 17 and Windsor Road.
- For Monmouth, highway safety and spot improvements along rural highways as well as drainage improvements along Route 132 beginning 0.16 of a mile south of Welch Avenue and extending north 0.7 of a mile to Academy Road.
- Monmouth Highway will experience safety and spot improvements along rural highways and roadside improvements along Route 132 Village Partnership Initiative. Beginning 0.4 of a mile south of Lakeshore Drive and extending north 0.93 of a mile.
- In Randolph, highway safety and spot improvements should be expected for urban highways drainage improvements along School Street Municipal Partnership initiative. Beginning at Water Street and extending east 0.004 of a mile.
Light Capital Paving
- In Gardiner, highway paving along rural highways and light capital paving preservation on Washington Street/Route 24 Washington Street: Beginning 0.07 of a mile south of Campus Road and extending south 1.54 miles to Route 11. Route 24: Beginning 0.16 of a mile north of Sherburne Avenue and extending north 1.02 miles.
- In Hallowell, expect highway paving and light capital paving along Second Street beginning at Winthrop Street and extending north 0.72 of a mile to the Augusta town line. Includes paved shoulders. Bridge milling – Bridge #0565.
- In Pittston, highway paving and light capital paving along Route 126 Beginning at Route 27 and extending east 15.1 miles to Route 213. Includes paved shoulders.
- In Readfield, highway paving and light capital paving Route 41 beginning at Route 17 and extending north 8.99 miles to the Vienna town line. Includes paved shoulders. Bridge milling – Bridge #s 2332, 2837, & 2987.
Draining Maintenance

Bicycle/Pedestrian/Trail Construction
- In Gardiner there are plans for Bicycle/Pedestrian On-Road Sidewalk/Trail New Construction – PE Only along Water Street beginning at Route 201 and extending southeast 0.16 of a mile. Then beginning at Main Avenue and extending south 0.05 of a mile.
