Senate enacts Sen. LaFountain bill to boost fundraising efforts for local charities and non-profits
AUGUSTA – On Thursday, the Maine Senate enacted a bill from Sen. Dave LaFountain, D-Winslow, that boosts fundraising efforts for local and statewide charities and non-profits. LD 147, “An Act to Increase the Amount of Money Allowed to Be Raised for a Charitable Purpose by Certain Raffles,” was inspired by a local organization in Waterville that reached out to Sen. LaFountain about improving a Maine law.
“The people of Senate District 16 sent me to Augusta to listen to them, advocate for them and get things done,” said Sen. LaFountain. “This vote in the Senate is the result of putting my constituents first, collaborating with my colleagues, and delivering results to boost fundraising efforts for local non-profits. “I look forward to the Governor signing this bill into law, and thank my colleagues, both Republicans and Democrats, for their efforts to get this through the Legislature.”
LD 147 would allow for more money to be raised for charitable purposes through games of chance. This bill would directly benefit communities served by organizations like the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce. Fundraisers such as the Festival of Trees in Waterville raise money for organizations that provide critical support for organizations that provide services to community members.
The bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Janet Mills, who has 10 days to sign it, veto it, or allow it to become law without her signature.
