AUGUSTA — On Thursday, November 21, Sen. Stacy Brenner, D-Scarborough and Sen. Cameron Reny joined state and local leaders for the unveiling of the updated Maine Climate Council’s Maine Won’t Wait Plan at Morse High School in Bath. The event highlighted the City of Bath’s work on community resilience and efforts by city and school officials to prioritize renewable energy in transportation, job training, and housing construction.

“Addressing how the changing climate relates to our wellness as a community and the success of our businesses is critical to the state’s economic future,” said Sen. Brenner. “I’m excited for the release of Maine Won’t Wait 2.0 and particularly about the section that aims to make 30% of food consumed in Maine being from Maine by 2030. This goal supports our heritage agricultural sector. The most protected farmland hosts farm businesses that are profitable. The intersection of food production, land protection and increased access to Maine produced food is a win-win-win for farmers, consumers, and the environment.”

“The past winter storms are just one example of how shifts in weather can harm our infrastructure and economy,” said Sen. Reny. “I am thankful for Maine’s leadership and response to the increasing effects of climate change. The updated Maine Won’t Wait plan gives us clear action steps to mitigate damage, and preserve our heritage industries and way of life.”

The Maine Climate Council was established in 2020 under the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future with the goal of achieving state carbon neutrality by 2045 and reducing Maine’s greenhouse gas emissions by targets as outlined in statute. The Council is required to deliver an action plan every four years. The Climate Council consists of 39 members representing various government agencies, the Maine Legislature, Maine’s tribal and indigenous population, scientists, business leaders and more.
