Vitelli supports Deborah Cashman nomination to Maine Superior Court
AUGUSTA — Sen. Eloise Vitelli, D-Arrowsic, is pleased to announce that Gov. Janet Mills has nominated Judge Deborah P. Cashman of West Bath for appointment to the Maine Superior Court. On Tuesday, the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on the Judiciary voted to advance Judge Cashman’s nomination, which now faces a final confirmation vote by the Maine State Senate.
“Judge Cashman has proven to be fair and compassionate during her time on the bench. But just as important is her defense work, her prosecution work, and her experience with family law and child protection cases,” said Sen. Vitelli. “Judge Cashman’s breadth and depth of experience make her an ideal candidate for the Maine Superior Court, and I look forward to voting on her confirmation in the Senate.”
Judge Cashman grew up in Woolwich and attended Morse High School. She began her career in private practice working in defense and family law before becoming an Assistant District Attorney serving Androscoggin, Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties. In 2012, Judge Cashman joined the Maine Attorney General’s office as a homicide prosecutor, where she remained until her appointment to the Maine District Court in 2016. In 2019, Judge Cashman took on the additional responsibility of regional scheduling judge for the Portland District Court, a critically important role during the pandemic. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mt. Holyoke College and her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law.
The Maine Superior Court is Maine’s trial court of general jurisdiction and is the only level of court where jury trials are available. Seventeen justices sit on the court, which can hear almost any kind of civil or criminal case that may be brought to trial except family matters, juvenile cases and civil violations. Appointments to the Court are for terms of seven years.
