Work plan for state bridge and road projects unveiled
AUGUSTA – Sen. Geoff Gratwick, D-Bangor, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.
“Our roads, bridges, and public transportation are key investments for the public and for Maine’s economy,” said Sen. Gratwick. “I am pleased to see the list of work projects for Bangor and Hermon, and hope that local official and members of the public find work plan informative.”
According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $511.1 million is scheduled for 604 capital projects in 2018. The 3 year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 229 miles of highway construction; 1,128 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 240 spot and safety improvements; and 260 bridge construction projects.
Sen. Gratwick stressed the importance of funding for the MDOT work plan and its investment to Bangor and Hermon. The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in the region in 2018:
Aviation:
- Safety and infrastructure improvements that may include design and reconstruction of Taxiway “A” south and light bar rehabilitation at the Bangor International Airport (BGR) in Bangor
Bicycle/Pedestrian improvements:
- Work beginning at Davis Road in Bangor and extending south 0.38 of a mile
Bridge work:
- Bridge study of Interstate 395 spanning Bangor and Brewer
- Bridge wearing surface replacement — Six Mile Falls Bridge over Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor, located 0.10 of a mile northwest of Route 221
- Work on I-95/ Broadway Bridge over Route 15 in Bangor, located 0.06 of a mile west off Exit 187 Interstate 95 northbound
- Protective coating on Interstate 95 bridges from Pittsfield to T2 R8, spanning the municipalities of Bangor, Carmel, Etna, Hampden, Howland, Newburgh, Newport, Old Town, Orono, Palmyra, Pittsfield, Plymouth, and T2 R8 NWP
- Structural maintenance on breast wall seat repair to US 202/Perry Road Bridge over Perry Road in Bangor, located 0.36 of a mile northeast of Mecaw Road
- Upgrading bridge rail on three bridges in Bangor and Hermon: US 202/Perry Road Bridge, Route 202/MCRR Bridge and US 202/ I-395 Bridge
- Replacing wearing surface and patching breast wall wings around footing on Black Stream Bridge over Black Stream in Hermon, located 0.30 of a mile east of Brad Way
Drainage Maintenance:
- Ditching, repairing and/or replacing culverts beginning at the Davis Road in Bangor to the intersection of Avenue Road in Levant
Highway work/light paving:
- Construction/rehabilitation beginning at Hancock Street in Bangor and extending northeast 0.97 of a mile to Hogan Road
- Paving beginning 5.78 miles north of the Hampden town line and extending north 13.80 miles to the Argyle town line, spanning the municipalities of Alton, Bangor, Old Town, Orono and Veazie
- Beginning 0.37 of a mile southeast of Wagner Road and extending southeast 7.68 miles, spanning the towns of Bangor, Glenburn, Hermon and Levant
- Paving beginning at Johnson Street in Bangor and extending south 0.57 of a mile to Venture Way
- Paving beginning at Venture Way in Bangor and extending south 0.40 of a mile to Hammond Street
- Construction of a parallel acceleration lane at Broadway northbound on-ramp in Bangor
- Roadway and intersection safety improvements on Broadway in Bangor, beginning at Center Street and extending 0.14 of a mile to Alden Street, including intersection improvements at north and southbound Interstate 95 ramps
- Extension of Interstate 95 southbound Exit 185 on-ramp acceleration lane in Bangor
- Safety and spot improvements at the intersection of Route 222 and Fourteenth Street in Bangor
- Safety and spot improvements at the intersection of Ohio Street and Fourteenth Street in Bangor
- Design for diverging diamond interchange on Hogan Road/Interstate 95 Exit 187 and Hogan Road/I-95 Bridge over Interstate 95 in Bangor, located 0.26 of a mile north of Haskell Road
- Paving beginning 0.04 of a mile southeast of Autocar Lane in Hermon and extending southeast 2.53 miles ending at Route 202 in Hampden
- Safety and spot improvements at the intersection of Coldbrook Road, Odlin Road and Emerson Mill Road in Hermon
Maintenance Signing:
- Beginning in Newport and extending north 39.98 miles to the Old Town city line, spanning the municipalities of Bangor, Carmel, Etna, Hampden, Hermon, Newburgh, Newport, Old Town, Orono, Plymouth and Veazie
Public Transportation/Capital Equipment Purchase:
- City of Bangor, Community Connector, carryover balance FTA funds for capital procurement
- FTA Section 5307/5339 for Preventive Maintenance, Capital Assistance, Operating Assistance, ADA Operating — Community Connector
- Bangor Area Comprehensive Transportation System (BACTS), Federal Transit Administration Sec. 5303 for metropolitan planning Fiscal Year 2018, funds are transferred to FHWA
