Work plan for state bridge and road projects unveiled
Democratic Sen. Shenna Bellows of Manchester is pleased to share the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for southern Kennebec County. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.
“Transportation infrastructure is fundamental to building a stronger Maine economy,” said Sen. Bellows. “I am pleased to see work moving forward on transportation infrastructure projects in Senate District 14, and I will work to ensure that Maine continues to make these important investments.”
According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $537 million is scheduled for 632 capital projects in 2017. Included are projects for highways and bridges, transit (bus), passenger and freight railroad, aviation, ferries, ports and other marine facilities, and bicycle-pedestrian access.
Sen. Bellows stressed the importance of funding for the MDOT work plan and its investment to southern Kennebec County and entire state. The following breakdown is what the planned capital and maintenance work will mean for the communities of Senate District 14 in 2017:
Bicycle/Pedestrian
- Work on 0.6 miles of Academy Road in Monmouth
Bridge Construction
- Burnham Bridge over Cobbossee Stream on the Pond Road at the West Gardiner and Litchfield town line
Bridge Work (Other)
- Work on Rolling Dam 2 Bridge on Route 24 in Gardiner over Rolling Dam Stream
- Work on the Tappan Bridge over Cobbossee Stream on the Hallowell Litchfield Road at the West Gardiner and Litchfield town line
- Work on the new Mill Stream Bridge on Route 11 over Mill Stream in Winthrop
Highway Light Capital Paving
- Paving in the Richmond area including Maple Street, Second Street, Route 24, Winthrop Street, Granite Hill Road and Route 105 in Augusta, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Richmond, Somerville and Windsor
Highway Preservation Paving
- Paving on Interstate 295 northbound beginning 0.53 miles north of Lewiston Road and going north 19.57 miles through Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Gardiner, Richmond, Topsham and West Gardiner
- Paving on Interstate 295 southbound beginning at the Gardiner tollbooth and going south 19.6 miles through Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Gardiner, Richmond, Topsham and West Gardiner
Highway Rehabilitation
- Work on Water Street in Gardiner
Highway Safety and Spot Improvements
- Large culvert replacements along Interstate 295 in various locations in Gardiner, Richmond and West Gardiner
- Work on 1.67 miles of Route 202 in Augusta and Manchester
- Work on one mile of Route 132 in Monmouth
Maintenance
- Removing trees along the Route 17 corridor from Augusta to Union
- Rehabilitating the curb on the Trask Bridge in Chelsea on Route 226 over Togus Stream
- Ditching in various locations on Maple Street in Farmingdale and Hallowell
- Cleaning under the guardrail on Route 201 in Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond
- Ditching at various locations on High Street in Gardiner and West Gardiner
- Ditching at various locations on the Hallowell Litchfield Road in Hallowell and Litchfield
- Ditching in various locations on Granite Hill Road in Manchester
- Ditching in various locations on Route 135 in Monmouth
- Ditching on Route 194 in Pittston and Whitefield
- Cutting trees and removing brush along Route 126 in Pittston and Washington
- Replacing a cross culvert on Route 41 in Readfield 0.02 miles north from the Beans Mills Road
- Ditching in various locations on North Road in Mount Vernon and Readfield
- Ditching in various locations on Plains Road in Litchfield and West Gardiner
- Replacing the wearing surface on Bowdoin Street Bridge over Mill Stream in Winthrop
