Sen. Chipman bill to address campaign financing is signed by Gov. Mill
AUGUSTA — Legislation from Sen. Ben Chipman, D-Portland, LD 780 “An Act to Change Municipal Campaign Contribution Limits” was signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills on April 22.
“I’m glad my colleagues in the House and Senate have supported this bill and the governor has signed it into law. I firmly believe we need to keep big money out of politics and stick to grassroots campaigning,” said Sen. Chipman.
In 2011, the prior administration made a change that doubled the amount allowable for contributions to candidates for municipal office. This law corrects the 2011 change, reducing the maximum allowable contribution from $850 to $500.
The law will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
