MEASURE AIMS TO STRENGTHEN STANDARDS-BASED DIPLOMAS
Senator Alfond introduces bill to form proficiency council
AUGUSTA–A bill aimed at strengthening standards-based diplomas received its public hearing in the state’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee today.
“When we created standards based diplomas, we spent a lot of time creating the right environment. We knew that a working group would be critical to tackling problems as they surfaced,” said State Senate Democratic Leader Justin Alfond of Portland, the sponsor of the measure. “Unfortunately, the working group we established has not met in a long time. There are some major issues that need to be addressed before standards based is adopted fully throughout Maine.”
The Legislature enacted standards based diplomas to ensure students can demonstrate proficiency in key areas before graduating. This bill would convene a council comprised of 15 people, including the Commissioner of Education, teachers, administrators, school board members, and other stakeholders. In addition to investigative duties, the council will be responsible for a producing a five-year plan for full implementation of a proficiency-based diplomas.
The measure, LD 1235, “An Act To Strengthen Standards-based Diplomas,” will receive a work session in the coming days.
