AUGUSTA – Ranking Democratic official, Senator Barry Hobbins (D-York County), released a statement in response to the latest announcement from the Maine Secretary of State’s office about an investigation into possible voter fraud.

“I look forward to the Secretary providing more details about this serious allegation and acting on it appropriately,” said Hobbins. “Certainly, we need to preserve the integrity of our voting system and ensure that it is not abused.”

According to the Secretary Charles Summers, the Secretary of State’s office is working with the Attorney General’s office to investigate a claim made by an employee of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles who reported an experience of accepting voter registration forms from persons believed to be non-citizens.

Hobbins added, “I hope that this investigation is conducted in an open and transparent manner and I look forward to their findings.”

“Furthermore, I hope this situation is not used as a political football. This is not a democrat versus republican issue – voter fraud is not tolerated by any political party,” said Hobbins. “The people of Maine deserve an honest process into the matter.”

Barry Hobbins is Senator for District 5 and a practicing attorney in Saco. He represents the communities of Buxton, Dayton, Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and part of Biddeford. Senator Hobbins is the Senate Democratic Leader.
