Sen. Vitelli unveils work plan for state bridge and road projects

Sen. Eloise Vitelli, D-Arrowsic, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.

“Mainers rely on a safe, efficient transportation infrastructure to get themselves and goods to where they need to be,” said Sen. Vitelli. “I’m glad to see these projects on the docket for the next few years, and I’ll continue to press for sufficient upkeep and investments in these areas.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.44 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes more than 1,900 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 199 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 1,142 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 203 spot and safety improvements; and 203 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work in Senate District 23 – Sagadahoc County and Dresden in Lincoln County – in 2019:

Paving projects:

  • Work on Route 209 from Richardson Drive extending south 3.62 miles in Phippsburg
  • Work on Route 197 from Route 9 to Route 201 in Bowdoin, Litchfield, Richmond, Sabattus and Wales

Bridge work:

  • Work on the Middle Bridge over the Eastern River on Route 197 in Dresden
  • Work on the Lower Bridge over the Eastern River on Route 128 in Dresden
  • Work on the Upper Bridge over the Eastern River on Route 27 in Dresden
  • Work on Oak Street Bridge over the MDOT railroad in Bath
  • Work on Sagadahoc Bridge over the Kennebec River at the Bath/Woolwich town line
  • Work on the Frank J. Wood Bridge over the Androscoggin River on Route 201 at the Brunswick/Topsham town line

Highway rehabilitation:

  • Work on Route 1 from the Cook’s Corner interchange to the Bath Viaduct, including the ramps at New Meadows Road and Congress Avenue, in Bath, Brunswick and West Bath

Intersection improvements:

  • Work on the intersection of State Road, New Meadows Road and Fosters Point Road in West Bath

Ditching/Culvert maintenance:

  • Ditching and replacing of culverts on the White Road in Richmond and Bowdoinham from Route 24 to Route 197
  • Replacing the culvert on Route 209 located half a mile east of Route 216 in Phippsburg
  • Work on the culvert on Route 1 located 0.19 miles northeast of Shaw Road in Woolwich
  • Work on the culvert on Berrys Mill Road located 0.31 miles south of Austin Road in West Bath

Natural resource management:

  • Work on the Maine Kennebec Bridge over the Lower Kennebec River on the Dresden/Richmond town line

New construction:

  • Work on Commercial Street in Bath from the train station and extending north for 0.13 miles
  • Work on Oak Grove Avenue in Bath from Crawford Drive and extending south 0.41 miles, plus 0.02 miles for divided highway, then beginning at Oak Grove Avenue and extending west 0.15 miles to Old Brunswick Road

Other:

  • Clearing trees and brush on Route 1 from George Wright Road to Birch Point Road in Woolwich and Wiscasset
  • Removing debris around guardrails on Route 1 from West Bath/Bath town line to the Brunswick/Freeport town line
  • Cleaning under guardrail in multiple locations on Route 201 in Richmond
