Sen. Daughtry receives perfect score on education record
AUGUSTA — Sen. Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, earned a perfect score of 100 percent from the Maine Education Association for her voting record on education issues. Sen. Daughtry is one of 16 state senators to earn a perfect score from MEA for their 2021 voting records.
“Educators are integral to our community,” said Sen. Daughtry. “They hold the key to the future of our state every day as they guide the next generation. Not only do they teach us how to read and count but also how to treat one another with respect every day. That’s why I championed legislation to protect teachers from bullying, track chemical use on school campuses and ensure fair wages for school support staff. I’m proud to receive this perfect score from MEA.”
This year, Sen. Daughtry championed efforts to fully fund education at 55 percent for the first time in the state’s history since it was mandated by voters in 2004. Sen. Daughtry also voted in favor of bills to ensure a good starting wage for school support staff including education technicians, school librarians and career and technical education teachers. Making sure these hardworking professionals are paid a fair wage will help schools attract and retain quality workers.
Sen. Daughtry served as chair of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee for this session before taking on the role of Assistant Majority Leader. She continued to serve on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee to champion students and educators. Sen. Daughtry sponsored legislation to re-establish the Commission on College Affordability and Completion, advance career and technical education opportunities, report pesticide use on school campuses, implement diversity, equity and inclusion trainings for educators and protect school employees from workplace bullying. Sen. Daughtry also supported investing in capital improvements to schools through the School Revolving Renovation Fund and improving air quality and ventilation systems in Maine schools.
MEA represents 24,000 Maine teachers and advocates for policies and investments that ensure that educators’ voices, values and priorities are heard and respected both in the workplace and at the State House.
Sen. Daughtry remains committed to fighting for Maine students, teachers and school staff in the Legislature.
