AUGUSTA – On Wednesday March 27, Sen. Jill Duson, D-Portland, welcomed Yousif Ibrahim, a senior at Cony High School, and captain of the Cony Varsity Boys Soccer team, to the Maine State House. Yousif recently was selected by the U-20 Iraq National Soccer Team after a month long training in Baghdad. Sen. Duson also welcomed Yousif’s mother Maydah Abbas and his father Rabeea Ibrahim.

“Yousif’s talent and hard work on the soccer pitch highlight his determination and sacrifice,” said Sen. Duson. “As he prepares to embark on this exciting opportunity to represent his country, he carries the hopes and aspirations of an entire community both here in Maine and around the world. We are very proud of all that he’s accomplished and that he’ll continue to shine brightly as he represents his home and Iraq on the international stage.”

Yousif was honored with a legislative sentiment for his achievement of being called up to the Iraq U-20 National Soccer Team. The U-20 International team is a highly selective squad with 21 positions available for an international pool. Yousif plans on pursuing soccer professionally and plans to move to Baghdad to join a soccer club in the summer.
