AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, the Maine Senate gave initial bipartisan approval to a bill from Sen. Joe Baldacci, D-Bangor. LD 860, “Resolve, Directing the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority to Apply for Federal Funding for the Purpose of Identifying the Rail Corridor Connecting Portland and Bangor as an Intercity Passenger Rail Corridor,” aims to leverage federal funds to identify and develop a major rail corridor for intercity passenger rail service.

“I’m very pleased my colleagues in the Senate recognized how important this bill is to Maine’s transportation future,” said Sen. Baldacci. “The potential to link Portland to Bangor through Lewiston, Auburn, Waterville, and beyond is not just an investment in our infrastructure but an investment in our communities, economy, and environmental sustainability.”

As amended, the bill instructs the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority to seek federal funding and assistance to formally recognize and develop a passenger rail line from Portland through Lewiston, Auburn, Waterville, and Bangor as an intercity passenger rail corridor. The initiative would evaluate how expanding rail services could enhance connectivity between Maine’s largest metropolitan centers, fostering greater access and opportunities for residents and visitors.

LD 860 now faces additional votes in the House and Senate.
