Senator Hill Announces College Goal Maine Program

AUGUSTA – Senator Dawn Hill, D – York County, is encouraging all students planning to attend college in the fall to participate in the College Goal Maine event on Sunday, January 19, 2012.

College Goal Maine is a statewide volunteer program coordinated by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) that provides free information and assistance to students and families who are applying for financial aid for post-secondary education. College Goal Maine brings together financial aid professionals from Maine colleges and universities, along with other volunteers, to help college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

“Applying for financial aid can be stressful for the student and family,” said Senator Hill. “I applaud the efforts by College Goal Maine to make the process easier and valuable in locating money to help pay for college.”

FAME will host free financial aid workshops at various sites around the state at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 29th. Locally, there will be a workshop at the York County Community College cafeteria.

Other workshops will be held at forty-plus additional sites throughout January and February. For more information about the locations and to learn more about the program, go to: www.collegegoalsundaymaine.com.

At each site, financial aid professionals will provide coaching staff to walk individuals through the application line by line and to answer questions regarding state and federal financial aid programs. Attendees should bring copies of their most recent tax information.

The FAFSA is the gateway to all state and federal college financing, and individuals hoping to qualify for financial aid must complete and submit the form. Deadlines for filing the form vary from school to school, and students should carefully consult the deadlines of every school to which they are applying. FAME encourages all students to complete the FAFSA as soon as after January 1 as possible. Online forms and more information are available at: www.fafsa.gov.
