Sen. Carney, Reps. Beck and Kessler present legislative sentiments to Becky Schaffer Award Recipient
AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, April 30, Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, Rep. Matthew Beck, D-South Portland, and Rep. Chris Kessler, D-South Portland, presented a legislative sentiment to Marina Bassett of South Portland in recognition of her winning the Becky Schaffer Award. Marina is a senior at South Portland High School who plays on the Beacons co-op hockey team. The Becky Schaffer Award is awarded annually to the top senior girls hockey player in the state.
“Marina is an extremely talented hockey player who has represented South Portland well in arenas throughout the state,” said Sen. Carney. “I commend her for her hard work and dedication to her sport. It was an honor to recognize her achievements in the State Senate with her family by her side. We wish her the best in her future endeavors — both on and off the ice — as she heads off to college.”
“The Beacons had a fantastic season, led by Marina Bassett,” said Rep. Beck. “The community is ecstatic for Marina. She worked incredibly hard, both on and off the ice. I am looking forward to following her career at Rivier University.”
“Marina had a fantastic season for the Beacons,” said Rep. Kessler. “She truly made South Portland proud with her performance on the ice and how she carried herself off of it. We’re all excited to see her perform at the next level.”
The Portland Beacons team is made up of players from Portland High School, Cape Elizabeth High School, Deering High School, South Portland High School and Waynflete. She is the first South Portland player to win the Becky Schaffer Award.
Sen. Carney represents Maine Senate District 29, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough. Rep. Beck represents Maine House District 122, which includes part of South Portland. Rep. Kessler represents Maine House District 121, which includes part of South Portland and part of Cape Elizabeth.
