Talbot family statement on the passing of the Hon. Gerald E. Talbot
PORTLAND, ME — The Talbot family released the following statement after the passing of Gerald E. Talbot on Saturday, May 9.
The Talbot family is deeply saddened by the passing of Gerald E. Talbot, a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle.
A pioneering human rights leader in Maine and throughout New England, Gerald devoted his life to advancing civil rights, social and economic justice and strengthening the voices of marginalized communities. He made history as Maine’s first African American elected to the Maine State Legislature, which paved the way for generations of leaders from all backgrounds to pursue public service.
He will be remembered not only for his groundbreaking leadership but for his kindness, wisdom, humility, sense of humor and generosity of spirit.
Our family is deeply grateful for the expressions of love, support and remembrance we have received during this difficult time. We mourn this tremendous loss as we also celebrate his extraordinary life and enduring legacy.
Details regarding memorial services and celebrations of life will be shared in the coming days.
