Sen. Gerzofsky's Bill to Assist Performing Arts Organizations Receives Senate Approval

AUGUSTA – Senator Gerzofsky’s (D-Brunswick) bill to provide a sales tax exemption to incorporated non-profit performing arts venues received unanimous approval from the Maine Senate today.

“The creative economy is an essential part of a community’s vitality,” said Senator Gerzofsky. “It brings family and friends together; it brings tourists to our towns; and it broadens our horizons in a way that enhances our community experience. Incentivizing organizations like Maine State Music Theater and the Bowdoin International Music Festival will allow them greater opportunity to grow and strengthen our economy.”

Currently the State of Maine provides sales tax exemptions for visual arts, literacy, and historical organizations, but not to performing arts organizations.

“This bill provides greater fairness in tax exemptions,” said Senator Gerzofsky.

During the public hearing in February, several individuals expressed support for the bill, including representatives of the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Maine State Music Theater in Brunswick, Kniesel Hall in Blue Hill, and the Penobscot Theater Company.

The bill faces more votes in the House and the Senate.
