DEMOCRATIC LEADERS WELCOME EIGHTH GRADE GIRLS TO THE STATE HOUSE
Girls participate in 18th Girls’ Day at the State House program
AUGUSTA– Top Democratic leaders met participants in the 18th annual Girls’ Day at the State House program this afternoon. Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland, House Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick, and Senate Majority Leader Troy Jackson of Allagash addressed the participants during their mock legislative session.
“Girls’ Day at the State House is a fantastic program and a great way for our future leaders to participate at the Legislature,” said Senate President Alfond, who presided over a brief debate among the Girls’ Day participants on the merits of virtual charter schools in Maine. “Meeting the girls was a wonderful experience; they are intelligent and curious and will be wonderful Maine leaders.”
Girls’ Day at the State House is a program of the Maine Women’s Lobby for eighth grade girls to learn how state government works, the important role women play in shaping Maine public policy, and how they themselves can have a voice on issues they care about.”
“It is a treat to have young students of Democracy in our House of Representatives,” said Speaker Eves said in remarks to the young women participating in the mock debate session. “My message to you is the same I give to my two young daughters: be a strong voice and fight for what you believe in.”
This year, more than 100 girls from across the state participated in the program. Many said this was not there first time in the State House, and most wanted to return.
“The first time I came to the State House was when I was 32 and
elected to the House of Representatives. You’re already well ahead of me, and I hope many of you will return to the State House in a few years as elected officials,” said Senator Troy Jackson. “And if nothing else, you should know that you are more than capable to serve here if that is your dream.”
