Sen. Millett returns to Education Committee
AUGUSTA — Sen. Rebecca MIllett, D-Cape Elizabeth, has been appointed by the Senate President for a third term of service on the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs. With her role on the committee, Sen. Millett will continue to be the Senate Democrats’ leading voice on education policy and advocate for Maine’s schools, students and teachers.

Sen. Rebecca Millet, D-Cape Elizabeth
“When I first joined the Senate, I came to Augusta with the belief that nothing was more important for our state’s future than a sustained and strengthened commitment to the education of Maine children, and that belief has only strengthened during the past four years,” said Sen. Millett, a previous Senate Chairwoman on the Education Committee. “Along with a stable, supportive family life, education provides children the foundation they need for fulfilling, stable lives as adults. It is the difference between a trained workforce and one ill-suited for the new economy. It’s the difference between an active, engaged citizenry and one that is disconnected from the world. My commitment to our schools and our students is as strong as ever, and I’m honored to have this opportunity to continue my work on the Education Committee.”
The Education and Cultural Affairs Committee has jurisdiction over the Maine Department of Education; the State Board of Education, the University of Maine System, the Maine Community College System, Maine Maritime Academy and the Maine Education Policy Research Institute. It also oversees state policy regarding school finance, governance and administration; school facilities; curriculum, instruction and assessment; teachers and administrators; special education and child development services; education for deaf and hard-of-hearing students; career and technical education; alternative education, school choice and home schooling; truancy and dropouts; educational services at state juvenile correction facilities; adult education; post-secondary education finance and governance; student assistance programs at the Finance Authority of Maine.
The committee’s cultural jurisdiction includes the Maine Arts Commission, Maine State Library, Maine State Museum and the Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation.
