AUGUSTA — Sen. Jim Dill, D-Old Town, released the following statement following President Barack Obama’s creation of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument:

“I have always supported the right of self-determination by the people of the Katahdin region,” said Sen. Dill. “Following President Obama’s action today, my purpose will be to do everything in my power to make sure this national monument is the best deal possible for the rural Mainers who call this region home. That means as much access as possible for the diverse recreational activities that are so integral to our heritage.”

Sen. Dill represents Senate District 5, which includes many of the communities whose residents have recreated in the land newly designated as a national monument.
