Gov. Mills signs Dill bill to rename bridge after fallen state trooper
AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill introduced by Sen. Jim Dill, D-Old Town, to rename a bridge after fallen Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell of Millinocket.
“Detective Campbell was a kind, selfless person who left a lasting impression on all those he knew and came into contact with,” said Sen. Dill. “We’ll never be able to fully repay his service to the state and people of Maine, but the newly renamed Detective Benjamin Campbell Bridge near his hometown of Millinocket will stand in lasting tribute to his memory. I thank Gov. Mills for moving this forward.”
LD 1827, “Resolve, To Designate a Bridge in Indian Purchase Township the Detective Benjamin Campbell Bridge,” which passed in a bipartisan roll call vote, would rename the West Branch Bridge in Indian Purchase Township after the state trooper who died on April 3 of this year while assisting a stranded motorist on the side of Interstate 95. A wheel came off a passing logging truck and struck him. Det. Campbell is survived by his wife and 6-month-old son.
Indian Purchase Township is next to Detective Campbell’s hometown of Millinocket. The bridge is located where Route 11 crosses the West Branch of the Penobscot River, on the way to Millinocket.
LD 1827 will take effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns sine die.
