Gov. Mills signs into law Sen. Dill bill to make Maine’s online burn permit system free
AUGUSTA – Recently, Gov. Janet Mills signed into law a bill sponsored by Sen. Jim Dill, D-Old Town. LD 268, “An Act To Eliminate Online Burn Permit Fees for All Areas of the State,” would make Maine’s online burn permit system free for residents.
“Eliminating the fee for our online burn permit system will yield many benefits that encourage safe burn practices and ultimately prevent wildfires in our state,” said Sen. Dill. “I am grateful that this common-sense bill passed the Legislature and has now been signed into law.”
While anyone can still get a handwritten burn permit for free from their local fire department or forest rangers, it currently costs $7 to use the online system to obtain one. LD 268 eliminates that fee.
The law will go into effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns sine die.
