Gov. Mills signs Sen. Baldacci bill to expand health care plans for retired police, firefighters
AUGUSTA — Gov. Janet Mills has signed into law a bill sponsored by Sen. Joe Baldacci, D-Bangor. The bill, LD 362, “An Act to Clarify Coverage for Retired County and Municipal Law Enforcement Officers and Municipal Firefighters Under the State Employer Group Health Plan” will expand health care and retirement benefits to retired municipal officers.
“Throughout the hearings and works sessions for this bill, I have repeatedly expressed the necessity for securing the retirement plans these brave Mainers need and deserve,” said Sen. Baldacci. “As the session comes to a close, I can have a little more peace of mind knowing this this bill will help many folks get the coverage they need. I am thankful to all my colleagues and constituents for seeing the need and help getting this to the Governor’s desk.”
LD 362 clarifies that retired county or municipal officers — be they law enforcement officers or firefighters — are able to enroll in their group health care plan so long as they meet the necessary criteria for the Retired County and Municipal Law Enforcement Officers and Municipal Firefighters Health Insurance Program.
The bill will become law 90 days after the Legislature adjourns sine die.
