JUSTIN ALFOND SWORN IN FOR FOURTH TERM IN MAINE SENATE

AUGUSTA— Last week, Senate Democratic Leader Justin Alfond was sworn in to the Maine State Senate for the 127th Legislative session. Senator Alfond is serving his fourth term representing Senate District 27, part of Portland.

 

“I am very grateful  to have the support of the people of Portland and to have been elected Democratic Leader by my colleagues,” said Senator Alfond. “Despite differences in political beliefs within the Legislature, this session presents opportunities for us to work together, and find common ground in order to serve the people of Maine.”

 

Alfond was unanimously elected Maine Senate Democratic Leader by the 15-member Democratic caucus.  He previously served as Senate President in the 126th Legislature and Assistant Democratic Leader in the 125th Legislature. As Senate President, Alfond formed the special Joint Select Committee on Maine’s Workforce and Economic Future. He previously served the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee and the Regulatory Reform Committee.

 

Justin is a Mainer with roots in Dexter and Waterville. He attended Tulane University and earned a degree in Business Administration. In 2004, Justin moved to Portland and founded the Maine chapter of The League of Young Voters. He served four years as the Maine State Director, leading initiatives such as Opportunity Maine, the Maine Energy Efficiency Disclosure Form, and Portland’s inclusionary zoning ordinance.

 

Justin is also an active member of a number of civic, political and philanthropic organizations. He serves on a number of boards of directors in Portland, Maine, and New England, including Avesta Housing, Opportunity Maine, Maine Initiatives, Kennebec Valley Community College, the New England Board of Higher Education and the New England Secondary School Consortium.

 

Outside of the legislature, Justin has worked on several housing and business projects, including 135 Sheridan St, 645 Congress St, and his latest venture, Bayside Bowl. Justin lives with his wife Rachael, son Jacoby, daughter Esther, and their dog Tipitina in Portland.

 

Wednesday, December 3, 2014 marked the official start of the 127th Maine State Legislature however, the first day of the Regular Session is expected to begin on Wednesday, January 7, 2015.

 

January 2 has been set as the cloture date for new bill ideas. Under Legislative rules, all new bill ideas must be submitted prior to that date.
