Legislative sentiment for Ray Broomhall

AUGUSTA — On April 6 in the Maine Legislature, a Legislative sentiment was made on behalf of Ray Broomhall for his retirement after 50 active years with the Mexico Fire Department.

The sentiment was sponsored by Dist. 93 Rep. Sheryl Briggs of Mexico and cosponsored by State Sen. John Patrick of Oxford.

Briggs said, “The younger firefighters in the department always looked up to Ray as a father figure, but most of all, as their mentor. Ray has a heart of gold. He continues to always be there whenever he sees the need or is asked by others to help. He’s always got the job done. Ray’s energy, stamina and commitment continues to amaze everyone today.”

Broomhall started on Feb. 11, 1962, with Hose Company No. 2. Through the years, he continued to receive promotions. Ray retired as deputy chief on Feb. 11.

He is a member of the Western Maine Firefighters’ Association and the Maine State Federation of Firefighters. During his tenure with the Mexico Fire Department, Broomhall received several honors and awards. In 1978, he received special recognition from the Town of Mexico for bravery in preventing the loss of life at a fire.

In 2001, he was named Part-time/Reserve Employee of the Year and received the George Downs Firefighter of the Year Award. In 2002, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Town of Mexico. In 2006, Broomhall received the State of Maine Firefighter of the Year award and was also inducted into the Maine Ski Hall of Fame. He also coached for several sports in the Mexico schools and Mountain Valley schools.

In addition, as a result of the Vietnam War Remembrance Day ceremony on March 30, Broomhall was eligible to receive a certificate as he served in the Cold War, which was presented to him by Briggs.
